The Madagascan Sunset Moth: these moths are often mistaken for butterflies, thanks to their colorful, iridescent appearance
Tumblr media
The scientific name of this species is Chrysiridia rhipheus, but it's commonly known as the Madagascan sunset moth. These gorgeous day-flying moths can be found only in Madagascar.
Tumblr media
Above: a dorsal view of the same species
The Madagascan sunset moth has a strikingly colorful appearance, especially when its underwings are exposed, as a rainbow-like effect is produced by the iridescent scales that cover the underwings (and appear in smaller sections on the dorsal side of the wing).
Tumblr media
Above: some of the iridescent scales on the underwings of Chrysiridia ripheus, as seen through a scanning electron microscope
The markings on the dorsal side are primarily black, with some patches of iridescent green, blue, and red. A "fringe" of white scales can also be seen along the edge of each wing; these are especially prominent on the hindwings.
Tumblr media
Above: the dorsal patterns are visible only when the wings are left open
Like most day-flying moths, the adults of this species will often feed on nectar. Their caterpillars are known to consume Omphalea plants, which are toxic; those toxins are sequestered by the caterpillar and then retained through the pupal and adult stages of development, which means that the adult moth is toxic. Their colorful appearance is likely aposomatic, deterring predators by signaling that the moth itself is toxic.

[image description: chart titled Talk Like A Technician: The Use of Technobabble.
Technology in Star Trek is complex and works in scientific concepts and principles that are far beyond what the majority of Players and Gamemasters are knowledgeable in. Throughout the collected media, Starfleet officers discuss technology using terms that most Players are not going to know. Instead of expecting Players to study and memorize technical manuals and reference books that have been published over the years we've provided an easy way to talk like a Starfleet engineer. Anyone can do "technobabble"!
To use the chart simply gather and roll d20s and consult the chart below for technical new terms and concepts.
Occasionally portions of the chart may not be applicable to the scene or circumstance. In that case simply omit that portion of technobabble!
The chart has six columns, Roll, Action, Descriptor, Source, Effect, and Device. Each has 20 rows.
Roll: numbers 1-20
Action: refocus, amplify, synchronize, redirect, recalibrate, modulate, oscillate, intensify, nullify, boost, reverse, reconfigure, actuate, focus, invert, reroute, modify, restrict, reset, extend
Descriptor: microscopic, macroscopic, linear, non-linear, isometric, multivariant, nano, phased, master, auxiliary, primary, secondary, tertiary, back-up, polymodal, multiphasic, tri-fold, balanced, oscillating
Source: Quantum, positronic, thermionic, osmotic, neutrino, spatial, resonating, thermal, photon, ionic, plasma, nucleonic, verteron, gravimetric, nadion, subspace, baryon, tetryon, polaron, tachyon
Effect: flux, reaction, field, particle, gradient, induction, conversion, polarizing, displacement, feed, imagining, reciprocating, frequency, pulse, phased, harmonic, interference, distortion, dampening, invariance

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your feral rabies-having Brainstorm and his dynamic with Prowl and whatever homoerotic tension they have. If we're talking prowlstorm headcanons for fun then in my mind: it's certainly NOT normal romantic, It's like a queerplatonic relationship except evil. They are the definition of "fucked up secret third option" and i love that. They are both SO unhinged and fucked up but in like completely opposite ways? Like, brainstorm is a rabid animal that bites and is loud, meanwhile Prowl is quiet, calm, collected (or at least he would like to seem that way). Brainstorm is unpredictible and chaotic, while Prowl is obsessed with structure and control. But both of them end up as antisocial outsiders that noone is comfortable with and noone trusts. They not only NOT know how to form meaningful relationships with other people, but futhermore - REFUSE to acknowledge their value. That makes them end up alone wherever they go.
But NOW - they are STUCK together, constantly, and have no choice but to get used to the other person (to varying degree of success). It's not exactly a healthy relationship, but it IS a relationship and thats saying something.
Anyway, those are just my ramblings and also i am quite new to your AU and transfomers in general, so let me know if I got anything wrong. Lots of love (and I NEED to see more of those two interacting please please please)
(PS. This might be my CSM brainrot talking but these two kinda remind me of Power and Makima, but less fucked up funny enough)
WOW, YOU STUDIED THEM UNDER A MICROSCOPE ! You got their gist, Brainstorm and Prowl are foils to one another like an unstoppable object vs unmovable force but somehow have to work together to accomplish their goal ! Their interactions are def one of my favorite ones to explore because of how polar opposite they are !

Where do the names "Autobot" and "Decepticon" even come from? Are there any sort of root words that go with them?
Dear Etymology Enthusiast,
This answer is complicated by language barriers that span galaxies. As Galvatron alluded to—albeit in tones I would never use—Cybertronian words can be very linguistically dense; a translation that conveyed every nuance of our equivalent for "Autobot" would take over seventeen minutes for a human to say! As such, "Autobot" and "Decepticon" are only approximations of the neocybex names of these factions.
In many universes, my faction is named for the ideals of freedom and autonomy—hence, "Autobot" is derived from the term "autonomous". Sometimes this reflects a casting off of Quintesson rule or triumph over a caste system, but in other contexts—sometimes simultaneously—it reflects a darker facet of Cybertronian history. A famous bot once said that autonomy was a gift, a spark of sentience kindled by Primus himself. That bot's name was Nova Prime, and he used that belief to justify the subjugation of hundreds of alien worlds.
The suffix translated as "-bot" encompasses ideas such as "person", "individual", "independent agent". It could be considered an adaptation of the common English-language "man", of course—you might be familiar with the Aerialmen, the Dinomen, and the Sparkamen—but "bot" conveys that it most commonly refers to mechanical lifeforms. While typically used in the names of teams and factions, occasionally an individual might be called "Dinobot" or "Dreadbot"; such sobriquets can be seen as similar to a human being carrying a family name as their first name, such as "Jackson".
As for "Decepticon"… much has been said of the phrase "you are being deceived." In many universal clusters, this is indeed the earliest origin of the term. "Decepticon" suffers to a greater degree from the imperfections of localization. In many universes, Cybertronian language uses nuances related to subject and object that fail to translate, especially when neologism is concerned; "Decepticon" principally suggests "deceptive" in English, but in its original Cybertronix, the waveform can simultaneously be read as "the deceived".
The "-con" suffix is not dissimilar to "-bot", though it carries subtly but significantly different implications. "Person" is an adequate translation, but its meaning is much broader, not being restricted to living creatures; you may know of data-cons, information storage devices commonly used in my home reality. The closest equivalent to the suffix in your language would be "entity"—or, more bluntly, "thing". As such, the translation "-con" is derived from your language's "construct", a created object or idea.
The reasoning for the use of this suffix varies across the multiverse. On versions of Cybertron where Functionism took hold, Cybertronians of lower labor castes, or with alternate modes considered fit only for use by others, were more likely to have "con" names or be assigned categories like "Constructicon", "Agricon" or "Recordicon". Conversely, in universes where the Decepticons originate as a military junta, the use of "-con" carries the suggestion of component; all Decepticons are considered to be a part of Megatron's war machine. These implications, of course, carry over to the Mini-Cons. While I am proud to count Safeguard as a friend and partner, for much of my world's history, Decepticon and Autobot alike treated his kind as "smart tools", as mere objects to be collected. Regardless, the Great War created extreme political polarization of the "-con" suffix, and nearly no self-described Autobot adopts it; even as Decepticons freely use "bot" to describe themselves, "con" is almost exclusively used by Autobots as a term of animosity.
One more suffix you may have heard of is "-tron"; here, the root is "positron"—which, before the introduction of microscope alt-modes, we simply understood to be the stuff of sparks. The Cybertron factions of realities like the G1 World and BT World draw their names from a well of indigeneity; unlike the invading, colonizing Quintessons, the Cybertrons are the true sparks of the planet and derive their name thus. The Destrons, then, are destructive sparks who oppose the planet. Naturally, "-bot" and "-con" recur in these worlds too, following similar etymological patterns.

“Copepods of various species. Photos were taken using a Biolam R-11 microscope. For photography, the dark field method was combined with polarization. Thanks to polarizing microscopy, the glow of muscle stripes in the bodies of some crustaceans is visible. Each photo is the result of panoramic shooting and focus stacking.” - via Wikimedia Commons (original description translated from Russian using Google Translate)

Wordplay Wednesday: Glass
You’ve likely heard the word glass before and you automatically think of windows or fancy cups. Today, I want to discuss volcanic glass. First, let’s talk about what it is not: a mineral. Minerals are naturally occurring, solid, inorganic substance, having a specific chemical composition and an ordered crystalline structure. Glass is non-crystalline but amorphous meaning it has no defined structure. It occurs naturally as the result of rapid cooling of molten rock. While it can have a specific chemical composition, it’s not as ordered.
Tumblr media
There are many types of volcanic glass depending on its composition just like with any other igneous rocks. Obsidian is the type most commonly referred to as volcanic glass. It is rhyolitic meaning high in silica.
Tumblr media
Another well-known glass is pumice. It may not seem glassy but it does not have a crystal structure and if you look at it under a high-powered microscope you would be able to see that it is a bunch of glass fragments melded together and filled with holes.
Tumblr media
Tachylyte is a type of basaltic glass with relatively low silica content. It’s typically a brownish color.
Tumblr media
Pitchstone is an acidic volcanic glass similar to obsidian but with more water.
Tumblr media
All volcanic glasses are chemically unstable and readily decompose, reacting with water and precipitating secondary minerals. This leads to altered ash beds like bentonite.
Tumblr media
Because of its amorphous nature, if you look at grains of glass under a petrographic microscope it will disappear under cross-polarized light.
Tumblr media
Thanks for coming to today’s lesson and tune in tomorrow to learn about the oldest igneous rocks on earth. Fossilize you later!

Round 1 - Phylum Bryozoa
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Bryozoa is a phylum of animals that, like many Cnidarians, live in colonies of cloned zooids that make up a larger organism, though some solitary species exist. They are commonly known as “Moss Animals”. Each individual bryozoan is usually about half a millimetre long. Colonies of bryozoans can take a variety of forms, including mats, fans, bushes, crusts, and balls. All bryozoans are filter feeders, using a crown of tentacles called a lophophore which surrounds a mouth. Most live in tropical saltwater, but some also live in oceanic trenches, polar seas, brackish water, and freshwater. 5,869 living species of bryozoan are known.
In a colony of bryozoans, there are different types of zooids responsible for different functions. All bryozoans will have autozooids (seen in the first image), which are responsible for feeding, excretion, and supplying nutrients to the rest of the colony. Some species have specialist zooids, including hatcheries for fertilized eggs, defense structures, root-like attachment structures, and/or spiny defensive zooids that are used as legs to slowly creep along. Each zooid consists of a cystid, which provides the body wall and produces an exoskeleton, and a polypide, which holds the organs. Each colony grows by asexual budding from a single zooid known as the ancestrula. Most start life as males, later changing to female, though colonies will always contain a balanced ratio of males and females. Although the zooids themselves are microscopic, colonies can range in size from 1 cm to over 1 m (3 ft 3 in).
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Bryozoans are an important part of the food chain, and are preyed on by nudibranchs, fish, sea urchins, pycnogonids, crustaceans, mites, starfish, snails, and insects. Likewise they are also important filter feeders, providing filtering services just like mussels and sponges do.
Fossil bryozoans are known as far back as the early Cambrian, making them one of the youngest phyla in the fossil record. (Though they may have appeared earlier and just not fossilized due to less mineralization in their skeletons.)
The genus Monobryozoon are the only bryozoans that don’t live in colonies. Their name literally means “Alone Moss Animal”. They are very rare, considered almost a mythical animal among scientists. One species has been found 3 times, another species once, and the last species may not even exist, as its one sighting was not confirmed.
Species that can produce defensive zooids only do so in response to a threat. They may produce these new warriors within 48 hours of sensing said threat.
Many bryozoans have symbiotic relationships with animals of other phyla. For example, the bryozoan Alcyonidium nodosum protects the whelk Burnupena papyracea from the predatory Rock Lobster (Jasus lalandii) by forming a strong crust on its shell and producing chemical defenses which deter the lobster.
Members of a bryozoan colony are genetically identical and co-operate with the use of chemical signals. They can respond to the scent of predators or rival colonies as one. Teamwork makes the… weird little ball of guys work.
I like to imagine them talking like the aliens from Toy Story

Rules: pretty self explanatory. include physical descriptions or pics, and propaganda. the “other” label can be used for “sexuality misalignment” (ie: oc is femme and you’re gay, vice versa or you aren’t into smashing but a specific thing you wanna do with them like perhaps hug or study them under a microscope idc).
